Live Colorfully-Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes

My last day in Melbourne I took a trip down to the Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes which is only a 25 minute drive from my hostel. Brighton is an affluent beach-side suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 11 km south-east of Melbourne's central business district. Brighton houses some of the wealthiest citizens in Melbourne with grand homes, and the development of large residential blocks of land. Brighton is also well known for its Dendy Street Beach with its 82 colorful beach boxes. Ever since I can remember I would see the color beach boxes and I promised myself I would see them one day and today was the day! Built well over a century ago in response to very Victorian ideas of morality and seaside bathing, the bathing boxes remain almost unchanged. All retain classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs, though they also bear the hallmarks of individual artistic talent and colorful embellishments. Thanks to these distinctive decorations, the boxes turn the Brighton seaside into an immediately recognizable, iconic beach scape that can transform by the hour according to season, light and color.

Fun Facts:

  • There are 82 beach boxes in total

  • The original price for the beach boxes were $700

  • The current selling price for a beach box is $250,000

  • The beach boxes are used to keep your beach supplies while visiting the beach and cannot be used as a home.
